Rabbits may be small in stature, but they have a lot of special needs and requirements that differ from the normal type of pets that we are accustomed to. So if you are considering going down to your pet store and getting a rabbit for a pet, you need to learn about how to take care of a rabbit first. To get you started, here are some things you should learn:

Rabbit Cage

As a rule of from, you need to make sure that the cage for your rabbit is a minimum of four times bigger than your rabbit. If you can make it bigger than do so, as bigger is always better especially if your rabbit is going to be spending a lot of time in the cage. The floor of the cage should always be solid. Lots of people still use cages that have wire floors in them with removable pads on the bottom as this makes them easier to clean, but these types of cages often cause sores on the rabbits feet and can lead to many problems. If the cage you have has a wire floor, cover it with sisal mats, grass or a piece of wood.

What Rabbits Eat

You need to make sure that you have a pretty much unlimited supply of grass hay for feed such as brome or timothy. Grass hay helps to ensure that your rabbit stays healthy by keeping its intestinal tract clean. You will also need to keep a supply of quality rabbit pellets on hand. Make sure that your younger rabbits, under the age of six months old, dead poets a minimum protein content of 15 to 19% and a minimum of 18% fiber. Collard greens, carrots tops, lettuces, turnip greens and other dark leafy vegetables should be the third component of your rabbit’s diet. You need to give your rabbit a minimum of 2 cups leafy green vegetables for every 6 pounds that it weighs. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.

Litter Training

For the most part, rabbits have a tendency to use one part of its cage for its toilet. In your pet has decided on what part of its cage it’s going to use, you need to fill that area with timothy hay or pelleted newspaper litter. The litter box should be changed daily to keep the cage as clean and as odorless as possible.

Keeping the Cage Cleaned

Make sure that you clean your rabbits cage once a week. Place your pet inside an alternate cage or somewhere safe around your house. You need to sweep the floor clean and remove any of the solid waste material. Use soap and warm water when scrubbing the cage’s floor.

Handling Your Rabbit

Improper handling of your rabbit can cause injury. Do not pick up the rabbit from it’s ears. Handle the rabbit carefully using one hand to support it’s front legs and the other hand to support it’s hind legs.

Supplies for Your Rabbit

The following items are a requirement if you want to own a rabbit: cage, pelleted bedding or litter box, carrier, hay rack and grass hay, grooming brush, quality rabbit pellets, safe chew toys, digging box, water and food bowl (preferably ceramic).
