Wall aquariums give a striking and elegant look to every room. They can be hung on a partition wall so that they can be seen from two adjoining rooms. Even though they may be more costly than regular aquariums and are harder to set up you will be very happy that you made the effort and investment when you see how good your aquarium looks and how much it is appreciated by visitors. They can, however, be slightly harder to look after than a regular fish tank as they are set up in a limited area which will make it a bit harder to get into the tank for cleaning, feeding and other maintenance. Some wall fish tanks come with compartments above or below the fish tank which will help make access easier.

A few of the more recent wall aquariums come as a kit with all the accessories and fixtures for mounting required, so that the pumps, filters etc. are easily concealed. These all-in-one kits are easy to mount so you might not require a builder to do the fish tank for you. On the other hand if you are not confident of your experience in DIY, it is better to pay a professional to do the job for you so that the only thing you must do is to add water and fish.

One of the things you should do prior to hanging your fish tank is to find out if there are any wires or water pipes in the wall at the location you are going to install it. You should also locate a load bearing wall and locate the wall studs. Tanks can be very heavy when you have filled them with water so you must be very sure that the wall can take this tank. You should decide if you prefer to hang the fish tank or set it into the wall.

The second thing for you to do is to find out the size of where the tank is to be hung and make sure you allow some room for accessories such as pumps, filters and lights. You can place the pump some distance away from the tank, and water can be pumped through through plastic pipes to the tank. Admittedly this may be a lot more effort when setting up it does have an advantage that you can move large amounts of water through the fish tank, which let’s you accommodate a few more fish, and also locates the noise of the pump in another the room. One of the problems with wall tanks is that they are narrow so they have a smaller surface area than regular rectangular fish tanks. This does mean that if you do not aerate the water well you won’t be able to keep many fish in the tank.

If you’re going to employ a builder to install your wall fish tank talk to him before you go out and buy the fish tank and make certain he knows your requirements. Once the tank is finished it can be set up just like any other tank by first cycling the tank before you add your fish. A good method is fishless cycling which is quite easy to do and does not cause harm to the fish. When the tank is cycled you may begin to buy your fish and plants if you will be using them.

An especially exotic effect can be achieved by making a saltwater fish tank with colorful salt water fish and corals, but this is, perhaps a project for a rather more experienced fish keeper. A wall aquarium, as previously stated, makes an excellent centerpiece to your room and is sure to be appreciated by all your visitors.
