After you have finished making your Koi garden, you are now on the fun part: you get to choose and pick the best plants and flowers that will suit your pond. Choose those that have beauty and the ones that will provide biological life, as it helps in maintaining your pond by doing what they would do as their natural function.

You should pay close attention to your climate and area, because some of these plants won't survive in certain kinds of conditions. You can consult with your local dealer to gain some ideas as to what plants are suitable for your pond.

Plants you can use for your Koi garden:

Water Hyacinths:

Having water hyacinths is advisable if you don't have the time to plant, if you don't have the time to maintain the foliage of your water garden or if you're just lazy enough when it comes to gardening. Due to their simple nature, these plants have become very famous recently. Never requiring any soil or planting, you can just simply throw them into the pond. They just need little time to anchor themselves so they will not freely float all over the pond.

Water hyacinths are ver beautiful as well as very functional, fighting blanket weeds and algae. The disadvantage of these plants is that they are very invasive, as they will spread over your garden and pond if they're allowed. They can infest up to the point of getting into your neighbor's yard, which could be difficult to get rid of.

Lotus:

The lotus can keep with the theme of having those tropical kinds of fish (like your pets) in your pond. This kind of plant has a beauty that's simply unequaled by the other flowers. The lotus gives your outdoor pond beautiful blooms and fragrant smells. These plants live well in temperatures higher than 65 degrees Fahrenheit, that's why during the winter seasons you may need to have a place to house them.

A greenhouse that's designed for water plants is truly a great thing to have when it comes to this. The lotus plants require soil and a large dosage of the sun's light. They should be planted in the pond 2 to 3 feet deep during the warmer seasons, and placed indoors during the colder seasons.

Hidden yet functional plants:

Have those plants that are not necessarily seen in your garden as well. These are the ones that live below the water line, providing important functions to your pond. They can battle algae, put oxygen back into the water, and feed the fish as well. These plants are sold in bundles by your local pet store or fish dealer. Once they're placed in the water, there's no need to worry about them, as many of them will not need additional support during the winter. The only thing that's not good with these plants is that they just can't be seen in your Koi garden.
